private collection, Great Brittan

view detail of HMS Victory

I accepted this commission from a historian in England. I new that the battle of Trafalgar was fought in a near calm so I figured that I would shroud all the ships in heavy smoke and make my life easy. The historian sent me a crate of books which I read and made notes from for several weeks. I also spent a lot of time down at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum making studies from their great collection of model ships. Then there was the deciding point on just what moment of time to freeze the action in the battle. By now, I wanted to include all the details I could and the idea of making a scene shrouded in smoke had gone up in smoke. The painting took several months to complete and was truly a labor of love.
