The Fountain
Mission San Juan Capistrano
24 x 32, oil

This Moorish style fountain adorned with plants and lilies sits in the center of the courtyard at San Juan Capistrano Mission. San Juan Capistrano might very well be the most painted architecture in California, inspiring artists and writers for over 200 years. This painting was created from sketches I did on a late August afternoon.

San Juan Capistrano Mission was founded November 1, 1776 by Franciscan Friar, Padre Junipero Serra. It is the seventh of twenty-one missions built between 1769 and 1820 that make up the chain of missions along the California coast. Long romanticize for its beauty and splendor, San Juan Capistrano Mission has earned the title: "Jewel of the Missions".
